No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
